[IBCP] Re: Discount for military veterans

Last Friday, I went to a VZW store in Beaumont, TX, with a copy of my DD-214 and asked for the Veterans discount. They speedily processed the request and told me I would receive a 15% discount on my basic service and a 25% discount on any future purchase of accessories. I asked if that 25% applied to phones and they said "Yes, if the phone is not already discounted". Usually, phones "on sale" are discounted more than 25%.

Today, I received an email confirming the changes to my account.

Yes Don,
Same old plan for all this time,my night mims. start at 8:00 PM.
We were in a camp ground two years ago when one day it was 1X and the next it was EVO and I still have Backdoor,lucky I guess.
I did change phones about 3-4 years ago,went to the MOTO 315.I think that's the model,back when you and alot of the others change.

Hi Phillip,

Are you still on the same old Plan with your same old phone?

If so, I would guess you are one of very few who still have
the old "MOU" Feature still on their Plan. Verizon gave this
Feature to anyone who asked beginning in early summer of
2003. They stopped this in the Fall of 2004, but everyone
with the Feature retained it until there was a change of their
Plan. This is all covered in "History of Verizon Backdoor
Access" in the Files Section.

First off,I will tell you that I have been using the Backdoor for about 8-9 years now with know problems.
I just got my new bill Feb-Mar and I see something new.
Under [usage type] it now says "PriorMth.PromoAllow.Data " and there is no charge?
Wonder what this is?

In addition to what Don suggested, you also have the Dare ($$$$), the Voyager ($$$), the Versa ($$$new one) and Palm Centro. None of which require the data package. The Dare actually impressed me which is hard to do as I sell them. All of the 1st three phones are by LG and have touch screens. The Versa came out about 3 March so the price is going to be high. It is like the Dare only it comes with a removable keyboard (tada). The Centro is basically a pocket pc with the Palm OS. A friend has one and she has the internet function shut off. Whatever one you get make sure you turn off the net function otherwise you may end up with a large bill.
If you really want to go cheap, and she is only using the phone for texting. Lookk into either a V or enV on ebay or from one of our members and go prepay. You can put a texting package on the prepay phones. These are just a couple of your options.

HI,
Let me tell you a story about "smart phones" and Verizon and me. Let August, I
was eligible fro new every two. I decided it would be fun to have a smart phone.
I got a Palm Centro. It is a fun toy as well as a phone. After about a month, so
I could mess around with the web stuff without a per MB charge, I added the
$29.95 Web and Email feature to it. I kept that for a few months. I decided then
to drop it as it was not cost effective for me. I found that I couldn't drop it,
because in the mean time, Verizon decided that all Smart phones must have either
that feature or the 44.95 feature that adds tethering to the mobile web and
email.
My solution was to reactivate my old Motorola V325. Anytime I need to travel, I
intend to reactivate the Centro and add the 44.95 feature to it for the duration
of the trip.
if anyone has a better idea or thinks I got some bad info, please let me know.

My teenage daughter wants a blackberry for her birthday.

However, we don't want to pay for internet access (we are kind of locked into verizon because of a continuous series of upgrades when kids break phones).

I keep telling her that the blackberry is kind of pointless without the internet/email. Her main use for a phone is text messages. She has been using an LG with a full qwerty keyboard but has had it replaced a couple times.

Any suggestions?

Progress!

But you are in a former Alltel area and that could
possibly be a factor. Another factor could be that
your number is blocked for any access without
a Data feature on your Plan. You won't know your
status for sure until you get to a native VZW area.

I assume you have "RUN WIZARD" to re-write new
connection scripts as a precaution.

1. Download & install driver: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/InternetByCellPhone/files/
2. Connect your phone with any generic USB cable you have (for camera,
printer, etc.).

I can only tell you what W385 users have reported.

An alternative would be to pair your W385 with
Bluetooth and use the "Bluetooth MODEM" for
internet connectivity. Once you have a BT Modem
in Device Manager, create a "New Connection"
script at "Network Connections" in Control Panel.

OK, I just got my PRL updated..What does it do? I very rarely get it updated, and roaming seems to always work just fine. Will it interfere with my getting dial up data access on a 1xxrt phone?

All that is there is a USB driver. After downloading the and un-zipping the USB driver, there is no set-up or install file in the package. Is there a modem package for the W385?

Most of Arkansas was extended prior to the Alltel acquisition - could still be. If you can't get a *228 to work that means you're not in a native VZW area and backdoor definitely won't work there.

If you selected Option 1, The "Programming" update
probably choked on your relic phones, aborted, and
gave you the error message. Just select Option 2!

2. Also check your coverage at http://tinyurl.com/2jez2 .
Bullet "Enhanced Services" and click on "Refresh".
Then check to see if you are in a White area. (You
would get the same error message)

If not in a white area and still get the "message",
your Backdoor days are probably over. I'm surprised
they gotcha' on both phone numbers.

[IBCP] Verizon Back Door

I connect to Verizon with my LG5200 and LG5300 tethered to my computer via
USB cable. I have been using the back door - but hardly ever use it because we
have been workamping in a park with WIFI.

Today while traveling, I tried to connect and could not. I tried both
phones, ran the wizard and even tried setting up a QNC connection. I get the
message "invalid user name or password". Am I shut off?

a BT modem just create a "new connection" to

Andrew, the only things showing under Modems is the one that's built
into the computer and the bluetooth one that VZAM still can't

Still problems...

#1 I uninstalled and reinstalled the Gz1 driver file, but it doesn't
ever prompt you to plug in the phone.

#2 I can't open VZAM as a program so that I can click on Options/Run
Wizard because it hasn't completed the installation because it hasn't
found the phone yet.

I even tried to connect using the bluetooth connection and I got a
little farther that way. At least the bluetooth modem is showing up
under Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and the phone
is "paired" with the laptop. BUT...I'm having the same problem with
VZAM not being able to find the phone.

So I'm still at square one. :-<

Run the driver file again but DO NOT plug
the phone in until prompted.

Now RUN WIZARD under Options in VZAM.

I finally got into the study to try to set up the XP laptop so we can
get online. I installed the Gz1 driver and VZAM. However, when the VZAM
installation tries to find the phone, it says that it can't find it.
I've checked the USB cable connection at both the computer end and the
phone end numerous times and they're both attached well, but each time
I test the connection it says that it can't find it.

This is a new problem for me. What am I doing wrong?

[IBCP] Verizon's Veteran's Discount

Greetings, gang!

Just an FYI. I took my VA medical card into the Verizon company store here in the Palm Springs area. No problem getting the discount, except the clerk didn't know the discount code and I didn't have it with me. (I hadn't expected to go there) He got it from the mgr and all went smoothly.

I did this on the last day of my billing cycle and the discount was included in that month's bill!

iPhone car charging cradle help

They have one. I use it but there are some issues you need to be aware of. The iPhone fits into the cradle tightly; if you use a cover on your iPhone it might not fit. Mine doesn't without a lot of effort, but I have a case that fits all around. It's not adjustable like some cradles. And I've found that the ball joint doesn't work real well.

It's a pain to adjust, and after several turns back and forth the nut comes loose and you have to tighten it again, which requires taking the thing apart, because I've also got a Sirius Stiletto mounted there as well. If you are constantly flipping the iPhone around it will come loose.

On the other hand, the ProClip mounts are specific to different vehicle models, so they are the cleanest fit you can get that isn't OEM.

I'd check with sites where owners of your specific car hang out; you'll get some better info on mounts there. There are just so many of them.

I'd avoid the FM units unless you live in an area with few FM stations; here in the Bay Area they aren't very good, especially after the FCC cracked down on them it seems. On my van I actually found it was easier to plunk down $65 for a new car stereo with an Aux in than fiddle with the FM transmitter. The stereos with iPod adapter will usually work with the iPhone, but not all, and not all will charge it. And the basic interface for the iPhone/iPod sucks on some of them.

[apple-iphone] Calendar items quadrupling

HI!

I use Outlook at work, and use Entourage at home as well as iCal. I also
have an iPhone. My calendar items get duplicated, tripled and even
quadrupled!!

Anyone know what I could do to fix this annoying problem? What do I change?

Fring allows you to chat and interact with others on a variety of networks

Fring offers Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) using the iPhone's Wi-Fi
connection. Features listed include:

• Instant Messaging
• Integrated dynamic contact list  with real-time contact availability

Fring supports SkypeOut and

Steve Jobs had said that VoIP calls over Wi-Fi was allowable in the App
Store when the iPhone SDK was first released. Fring should also work with
the new iPod touch, which supports an external microphone.

I am certain AT&T will howl about this one and Apple will pull it. Only
those that have downloaded it before then will get to keep it.

[apple-iphone] I picled up Wunderadio, FStream, and Wifi Finder today

Wifi Finder at 99 cents is a bargain and very useful.
Wunderadio is amazing but at $6.95 needs some to ask do they really need a
nice product like this? It also has a number of known bugs that don't
bother me but may freak out some who don't realize what is happening. If you
want easy access to thousands of streams from all over the world this is the
best application I have found so far for the iPhone. Our
Apple-iPhone friend from Turkey should pony up for Wunderadio immediately
and look under International - Europe - Turkey for dozens of cities and
probably a hundred or more of local Turkish radio stations from that area.
By contrast I found only four for Trinidad and Tobago and none of those four
worked properly today. So your mileage may vary according to the part of the
world you want to monitor.

FStream is interesting but has a poor UI and is more of hackers tool. If you
like typing long URLs as commands it is OK.
FStream is only slightly overpriced at FREE, but for the average iphone user
it is way overpriced.
FStream makes Wunderadio seem like a incredible bargain at $6.95.

What I like about FStream is that it plays ASX streams and they
are fairly common as I discovered in researching Turkish radio. Wunderadio
plays them too. Wunderadio is transparent to the user who doesn't
even realize how their radio stream was acquired.

If someone really wants I could write a review of any of the above. I also
have Sticher Radio, Tuner Radio, FlyCast Radio, to compare them with on the
iPhone.

Wunderadio is probably the best of the lot for function.

MobileCast is a free podcaster that slipped by Apple's censors. I am using
it to look at Discovery Channel videos on 'Dirty Jobs".
It too has a few bugs.
